Vellum_19

Over the past two months I have been working on a furniture piece for Vellum. Which is a furniture design competition hosted by the firm Vellum + Design Build and the College of Architecture. This past weekend I completed my piece and got to present to the San Luis Obispo Community in downtown SLO.

Below is the initial design that I had come up with that I adapted from Ethan Chewbowlski’s YouTube video. Essentially I wanted to add sliding drawers underneath and rather than buy a butcher block countertop, I’d make one.

The entire process was pretty grueling. The first thing I had to do was take apart all the pallets. This meant breaking each pallet down and then removing ALL the nails from each board. To make this process easier I ended up using a circular saw to cut the edges off, so I only had to pry out the middle of the board. In the end, I used about 6 pallets worth of wood, granted they were all different shapes and sizes, and I had to throw out a good amount of wood because they were broken or had nails that got broken off and stuck.
