The Job Hunt

Adulting = Bills, money, responsibilities. I want to be a kid again, life was so much simpler. All I had to do when I was six was be cute and not talk back to my parents. In high school I never had a job, school and swimming were what kept me occupied. But now, I have to find a real job, an adult job. No more easy jobs on campus in my little college bubble, I am about to head into the real world.

We just had our college career fair, and I am wiped out from it. I think I talked to at least six or seven firms. Plus my feet are killing me- I was on my feet for basically the whole three hours, and I only own heels as dress shoes. So recommendation to all the ladies who are reading this, do yourself a favor and get some comfortable flats. Here are some things I also recommend you prepare before your next career fair.

  • Update your resume and portfolio

Make sure your resume is up to date with previous work or school experiences that are relevant to what you are applying to. Since I am at an architecture career fair I made sure to include my internship work experience and relevant experience, such as projects I had done for school. An example of relevant experience that I used on my resume was Vellum, which was a furniture design competition that I participated in for Senior Design. So design competitions or research where you work with a professor all can count as relevant experience. You don’t necessarily need to stress about having real work experience on your resume because recruiters are going to anticipate that you don’t have any work experience. They want to see what other things you have done or exemplified in past activities or jobs. Updating your portfolio is extremely important as well. Make sure to have two to three projects you are super proud of and showcase them. You don’t want to show all your work and have the work you are showing be sub-par. Remember you want to “put your best foot forward”.
